Monster Drawing Rally

I participated in the Monster Drawing Rally at Spaces last night. Prior to the event, I felt uncomfortable about the fact that I would have an audience while creating my piece. But, once I started working it was no big deal and I ended up having a great time making artwork while hanging with my friends.

I didn't take very many pictures because I had my hands full, but I did manage to snap a few of my partners in crime for the evening, Steve Brown and Chris Ryniak.

TEMPT1 and the EyeWriter

Tony Quan a.k.a. TEMPT1 was a graffiti writer based in Los Angeles in the 1980's and 90's who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gherig's disease) in 2003. It is a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder that causes physical paralysis but does not affect eye or brain function. TEMPT1 no longer has the ability to move his body, eat, or breathe with out the use of life-support. There is no known cause or cure and on a personal note, I lost my mother to this disease in 1996.

TEMPT1 began working with Graffiti Research Lab, openFrameworks, and Free Art and Technology in 2009 to develop eye-tracking headgear and software that has enabled him to start creating artwork again. They have used a robotic arm to draw his tags on paper and projectors to draw on buildings outside while he is in the hospital creating it with his eyes.

This is truly an amazingly beautiful and inspirational story that touched my heart.

Small Works

My last show of the year will be at Proximity Gallery in Cleveland on December 17th, 18th, and 19th in an exhibition called Small Works. All artwork is 12" x 12" or smaller and will be priced at $100 and under- That's quite a deal if I do say so myself. I will be showing 2 new little drawings (Rendezvous and Always Distinctive, Always Dependable) and 2 not so new little pieces (May and The Hypnotist Page Eight).

Parker's Box, NYC (March 2010)

Another piece that followed the recurring theme of spatially overwhelming artwork was Pierre Ardouvin's "La Chose", part of the exhibition Unidentified Living Objects at Parker's Box.

It was the first piece in the show and held quite a presence through the front windows. Upon entering the gallery doors, I was not only amazed by the size of the bulbous, balloon-like structure, but was instantly confronted by the fact that it was breathing. See the video below...

It's shape trailed off into the corner like giant, black, sudsy, bubbles that stopped about a foot from the wall. In order to see the rest of the show, one had to squeeze past it to get to the other rooms. It felt as if I was carefully stepping over the tail of a sleeping beast in order to escape.

Mike Nelson at 303, NYC (March 2010)

Mike Nelson's Quiver of Arrows at 303 Gallery consisted of 4 abandoned trailers on stilts that were tightly packed inside the gallery. We waited in line for a few minutes before walking up the wooden stairs to the door. The wall vinyl near the entrance warned to enter at ones own risk and only a small number of people were allowed in at a time.
Each cramped and dusty trailer led into the next with no way out in between. The passages from room to room were narrow, accompanied by a dank and musty smell. Televisions and lights were left on, open books on the table, pictures on the walls, ashtrays, dishes, and notes left out in the open. It was as if the people that lived there had left in a hurry and I didn't want to be around when they returned, if they returned. Half way through, I looked out the window and all I could see was the trailer twisting around the bend. Feeling uneasy, I didn't linger in any of the rooms too long and actually couldn't wait to get out of it.

The Guggenheim - New York 2010

I had a chance to check out Memory by Anish Kapoor while visiting the Guggenheim Museum last March. It was part of a common theme along my NYC trip of massive structures squeezed into small spaces. In this really bad photo that I took (below), you can see cables going across the doorway, preventing any one from entering. I found myself wanting to crawl under them to get inside for a closer look.

I had my first Tino Sehgal experience with Kiss and This Progress.

The Guggenheim was one of my most memorable stops on the trip.

Domina Derval

I have had many cats as pets over the years. Mira Shadow, Moogie, Mama, Miggit, Purple, and Gibby. Cats are cool in my book. But, I decided to give my allergies a break and not have fuzzy pets for a while and have been cat free since 2002. I have been asked many times since then if I wanted to take in a kitten. Not once did I ever even consider it.

About a month or so ago, I went to my friend Christine's house to meet up for a bike ride. She mentioned that there was a friendly stray kitten hanging around that needs a home. As I rode up to her house, a skinny little black kitty with huge eyes came out from under the stairs. Probably afraid of the bikes, she arched her back and puffed her tail- just like a Halloween kitty. I was instantly intrigued. The resemblance to my last and most favorite cat Mira, who was also a stray, was uncanny. The only visual difference was that Mira had white whiskers and this one had black.
I instantly told Christine that I wanted to give this kitty a home. A few weeks later, she brought the cat over to my place. Bath, treats, food and a long nap followed. 2 days later, I took her to Gateway Animal Clinic in Tremont where she got tests and shots and was surprisingly well behaved. She got a clean bill of health except for fleas which they treated.

After a bout with vomiting, she seems to be adapting to the indoors very well and I have decided to name her Domina Derval. Domino Derval is the name of the James Bond girl from the movie Thunderball. In honor of Mira I changed it to Domina so I can call her Mina. She responded to it right away.

And so I introduce, little Domina Derval...

I rode an elephant

I had my heart set on having a full day in the studio yesterday. It was going to be 90+ degrees with a chance of thunderstorms and I was happy to stay indoors in the air conditioning to work on my last commission of the year, "What's Your Poison?". At 10:21 AM I recieve a text message from Phoebe informing me that she is going back to the county fair this evening and that the elephant show is at 6 and 8. Three minutes later, I receive another message from her typed in all caps that reads "HOLY F*** YOU CAN RIDE THE ELEPHANTS!!!!!!!". This is not something I could not pass up.

Repetition/Correspondence at Asterisk Gallery

In December 2009, I started a long distance mixed media collaboration with Chris Zahner who lives in Boston. We each started pieces and sent them to the other to finish. I received the final package days before the show and installed the 7 pieces, letters, photographs and other items the evening before the opening. I enjoy working in different mediums and this gave me the opportunity to work with collage, watercolor and charcoal. Some of the items that didn't make it to the show were a kite and a box of objects I found on the ground. This is an ongoing project so I will post images when others are completed.

I installed all the pieces on an angled wall which is fitting for a collaboration project. The show at Asterisk Gallery runs through May 1, 2010.

Oh, What A Spell You've Got Me In

I generally do not enjoy doing commissions because they don't allow me to create the artwork in a natural way. I have become more selective with which ones I agree to do (dogs and babies for family members and very close friends only), but I am always open to listening to ideas. Oh, What A Spell You've Got Me In was one I didn't hesitate to say yes to and definitely enjoyed doing.

There were no requirements- just small clues about the person it is being given to and that it will be a Valentine's day gift. The clues were musical- he likes Sinatra and others from the genre and loves to sing songs like- Wee Small Hours of the Morning by Sinatra, Smile by Charlie Chaplin, Taxi by Harry Chapin and Scotch and Soda by Kingston Trio. And she wanted a large painting- vertical 60" x 40".

This was an ideal situation for me because I basically got to paint whatever I wanted. So, I decided to work backwards and settle on a title first. Once I read the lyrics to Scotch and Soda- I got the image of a dark nightclub with a smokey lounge singer on top of a piano singing...

Scotch and soda, mud in your eye. Baby, do I feel high, oh, me, oh, my. Do I feel high.
Dry martini, jigger of gin. Oh, what a spell you've got me in, oh, my. Do I feel high.

People won't believe me. They'll think that I'm just braggin'.

But I could feel the way I do and still be on the wagon.
All I need is one of your smiles.

Sunshine of your eyes, oh, me, oh, my. Do I feel higher than a kite can fly.
Give me lovin', baby. I feel high.

The Deadly Diamond

I finished The Deadly Diamond this weekend for the Asterisk Xmas Benefit on December 11 & 12. There were some lingering pieces from Spicy Dames that didn't make it to the show and this is one of them. There was also Forever is Tomorrow, The Dame Dies Twice, Read 'em and Weep, and When Time Went Mad. Snatch this one up while you can because I won't be showing new work until spring 2010.

I had a fantastic time at the opening! Thanks again to everyone who made it out and to Bill for doing an excellent job, as usual, with the show. It exceeded my expectations, especially the fact that all of the pieces but 2 paintings sold. I put a lot of energy into this exhibition and it was definitely worth it.
